Book a free measureA dining room sits between a living room and a kitchen in how hard it gets used: chair legs scrape, glasses get knocked over, and a big table leg can dig into a soft pile if the feet are not protected. Hard-wearing carpets, laminate and engineered wood all work well here, provided chair-leg protectors do the rest of the job.
If the dining space opens straight off a kitchen, it is worth thinking about the floor as one continuous choice rather than two, so there is no trim strip running through a room you can see the whole of from the sofa.
Engineered Wood questions
What makes it "engineered" rather than solid wood?
Engineered wood has a real timber top layer bonded onto layers of plywood or board underneath. That construction copes far better with the temperature and humidity changes of a normal home than solid wood, while keeping a genuine wood surface you can see and feel.
Why is engineered wood sold by the pack?
Like LVT and laminate, engineered wood boards are boxed into fixed-size packs, so the pack-area rule rounds your floor area up to the next whole pack rather than pricing a continuous roll.
Can it be sanded and refinished later?
Most engineered boards can be lightly sanded and refinished once or twice over their life, depending on how thick the real-wood top layer is. That figure is shown in the specification table for each range.
Is it suitable for a kitchen?
It copes with normal kitchen life but is not fully waterproof, so standing water and heavy splashing are best avoided. For a wet-prone kitchen, LVT is usually the safer choice.
How long does fitting take?
Engineered wood is usually a little slower to fit than laminate because the boards are heavier and the room needs to acclimatise first. Darcy confirms timing and any acclimatisation period at the home measure.
