Questions about vinyl

Is sheet vinyl waterproof?

The surface is fully waterproof, which is why it is the usual choice for kitchens and bathrooms. Water can still find its way through a join if one is not sealed properly, which is why a bathroom is often fitted with no seam at all where the room size allows it.

Why does vinyl also come off a roll?

Like carpet, sheet vinyl is manufactured and sold in a fixed roll width, so the same roll-width maths applies: you pay for the ordered area, not just the floor area, and our estimator shows both.

Can vinyl go over old tiles?

Often yes, provided the old surface is flat, sound and free of movement. That is confirmed at the home measure, because laying over an unsuitable surface is exactly the kind of problem a subfloor check is there to catch.

Does vinyl need underlay?

Sometimes a thin underlay is used to smooth small imperfections in the subfloor, but it is a different product from carpet underlay and is confirmed at the measure rather than added automatically.
